Rockets Take Care of Business

The Castle Rock Volleyball team is among the smallest in the area, but quite possibly the most dominant. Currently ranked 6th in the state 1A rankings, the Lady Rockets put on a dynamic display on Thursday night defeating a much improved and feisty Kalama team 25-17, 25-18 and 25-21.

Dominance may not be the correct word, as Kalama fought gallantly against a powerful current. The Rockets prepare for bigger opponents including themselves. “We really practice hard explained Rocket Head Coach Jenna Bayes “At practice, we raise the nets to make sure that we are jumping high to get over the net“.

Each time the lady Rockets gained a little ground, Kalama would scratch & claw with their solid skills. Of particular note was the play of Kalama’s Liebro Whitney Westrick. A nearly even rate of play resulted a 9-9 tie early and game two, but the Chinook concentration waivered and Castle Rock pounced running the score to 20-10 based on a few Kalama mistakes.

In game three, Castle Rock made it into a laugher early, but then found Kalama fighting back to make it a narrow 25-21 win.

“My defense played phenomenal tonight.” said Bayes about the play of her team. Lacey Seidel made three digs where everyone in the gym assumed Kalama had just earned a point. 5’11” Senior Emmy Dolan made more than her share of dominating plays around the net.
