Maybe I can shed some light on next weekends matchups as I've seen the 2 coming south after a day at Lynnwwod HS. I didn't stay to watch the CPC vs LC game. Left the house early this morn and just got back and didn't want it to be any later so can't speak for the lower seeds matchups going north.
First off, Kings vs Kalama. Teams remind me of one another a lot. Both have good length w/o a real big kid although the Kings post does have some beef. Kalama has a nice athletic 6'6 kid that jumps and rebounds well and can step out and shoot it but likes to stay inside 15 ft and does knock those down. The Vossen kid is a bulldog, plays with an attitude, and can really get it going when he's hot. Bannister can step out and shoot the 3 and has a great pullup inside of 16ft. Shagool is their defensive specialist, but has deep range also. The Wall kid is the most dangerous, was the MVP down here and has all the tools. Great handles, shoots from anywhere and can really get to the hoop L or R. They like to get out in transition and are known for their "runs". As a final comparison, Kings has a lot more depth
but Kalama plays a lot more aggresive brand of ball. It seemed like Kings liked to finese things a lot but Kalama will just flat get up in your face. Also, Kalama brings a lot of experience from last yr in these situations and I think their D, shooting, and ability to score a bunch quickly gives them the edge. Just a side note. Kalama has not played as well the last 3 games as earlier in the season and it makes you wonder if they peaked to early or if the season is getting long as they played in a fall league in Portland.
The Toledo -MB matchup is interesting. MB will not match up well with them in 2 positions. The Rakoz kid is all of 6"7 and long. Unlike some of the other bigs who play block to block, the kid was a 6'4 point guard all the way through his freshman yr in Chehals prior to his families move to Toledo. As a result, Merzoiane will play him at all 5 positions and he plays best when he's moving. He will post him up, or let him create a lot of stuff off the dribble, both for himself and his teamates. He shoots from anywhere and has a very sweet pullup jumper from 3 pt land and in. The Trafelet kid is 6'5 and is of the same mold. Plays best facing up, shoots the 3 or takes you off the dribble, and also has a great jumper. Both kids rebound very well and both will go from a D rebound to right up the court with it. Both these kids are strong and do not play soft at all. Then they have a soph guard who has no fear of anyone or anything and will create a lot of grief out front. He had some turnover issues early but Merzoiane has fixed those. Can shoot the 3 and penetrate, a really strong kid. The other soph guard runs the point most of the time. He has great handles and doesn't get rattled. He has a nice shot from outside the arc and shoots a very good pullup also. The final starter is a real role player. He rebounds very well and runs the point off and on with the other guard. Can shoot it but doesn't look to much. Then they go 2 or 3 deep off the bench and really don't lose a lot depending on the rotation. In comparing them to MB, from what I saw today MB had some very good shooters, one in particular. With the exception of the one, most of the others were catch and shoot types and Toledo plays right up in your mug, physical D and you won't get many opportunities to just catch and shoot. I didn't see a lot of off the dribble stuff. I know the nature of the NW league is rough and tumble but Toledo will be comfortable in that mode. MB rebounded the ball well but won't get many 2nd opportunities as all the Toledo kids are board crashers. As to can they beat Toledo, any team can beat another on any given night given the right circumstances. But if Toledo brings its game, it will be awful tough for MB to get them.
On a final note, both Toledo and Kalama played their last 2 district games in this gym so they will have a slight advantage for gym familiarity and they don't have the long bus rides.

buff: sorry, missed this post. good info. great observations on kings as
well, too. kings has frustrated a lot of teams with their defense and
it usually shows up late in the game when opponents are tired and the game
plan goes out the window. the defensive breakdowns that plagued them early this year (and caused them to blow big leads against SA and CPC) have been fixed. the major weakness of kings is that they have
gone cold from the outside, so teams are zoning them. but if the shooting touch comes back, look out. kings has a lot of depth, so if it turns into a foul fest, they have advantage. they can score driving, have some decent bigs that can score down low and from the midrange and like I said, if their outside shooting form returns, they are tough to stop. agreed gym familiarity is advantage, as will the lack of drive for Kalama, though kings plays in a league that takes them all over the place, so not that big of a deal. kings has only lost once in 24 games if they keep teams below 50 points and it looks like Kalama has only scored less than 50 once--and lost. while both teams can score, defense will decide this one is my guess and it could come down to a few key stops.

I watched both teams at State last year. Kalama was very young. They have several guys back. I was impressed with Toledo at the State Tournament last year. They're built for the tournament. I don't think it's a great matchup for Mount Baker. Would have preferred to see them play Kalama. I'm hoping for a Baker win, but I expect both of the SW teams to advance.

Maybe someone can enlighten me. Yesterday was the first opportunity to see Cascade C play. As the game progressed there was a lot of "flopping " for lack of a better word around the basket between Spencer and the MB kids. MB was right up into him all the time but somehow arms were tangled and then there was a pile up. I really couldn't tell where it came from, although a lot of the fouls were directed towards MB kids. I did think they lived outside the boundaries of post defense several times, and right to the edge of it a lot, but it just seemed to happen more than any game I've ever watched. Any thoughts?

I'm associated with many around the NWC and Mount Baker is known every year for pushing the limits of physicality. Don't want to say taht their dirty, but I'm not saying that they aren't. However, that's the type of team they have, and they always get after it as hard as they can. I think the way they could win is if one of your studs, Rakoz or Trafelet, gets in foul trouble. If that happens, Baker could capitalize. However, I think Toledo will win by about 15.

in all fairness to Mount Baker and their style of play, Spencer is very theatrical when he gets tangled up with another player. I have seen him act like he has been mugged when somebody breathes on him.

Lol. Interesting observation about Spencer daretobe.
We used to refer to our matchups with Mount Baker as the "black and blue" games. They have that reputation, but frankly, there are other teams in our Conference every bit as physical as Baker.

Very true Warrant very true. If the refs allow this game to be a physical affair the advantage definitely goes to Baker.

Any idea on how the refs chosen for these games? I know they've already been apppointed and were so before the last district games were even posted. Will it be a crew all from the same area or will they mix them up? When I went up and watched Ony and Toledo up north last yr, both crews were pretty solid. I would think you get the best down the stretch like this.

I've been curious about that myself. I have a question for you BBB. You mentioned that you watched the first two games at Lynwood then left. I assumed you were scouting a team/ teams down South?

Just came up to catch someone I hadn't seen yet. I was curious as to which two teams would be coming south and wanted to see who it would be and what they looked like. Saw both Merzoian from Toledo and Stemkowski from Kalama there with their coaches and I don't think they need any help from an old fart like me. Having seen Toledo play 5 or 6 times this yr, I think the only way the physical style that MB brings will affect the outcome will be if the officials don't call the fouls that should be called, those that cause missed shots or turnovers. There's always lots of stuff that goes on that doesn't affect the play but you would think the officiating crews now would be pretty solid and would keep it under control. As far as Kalama goes, I still think they have an edge against Kings but I think bench play may play a role in that game. It will be an entertaining day of basketball down south and I think it could be up north also. It'll be interesting to see how CPC comes off their first loss of the season. I haven't seen them nor LC play so don't have a lot of insight as to how Hoquim and LaCenter will do. I know both teams could be dangerous if they play well but they have both been so inconsistent this yr it's hard to tell what to expect.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I watched Toledo and Kalama last year at the State Tournament. My gut tells me I'll be watching them again at the State Tournament.

I agree BBB... I have watched Toledo play three games this year, and I dont beleive they will shy away from physical play. They looked plenty strong and physical to me.

BBB...the physical play you mentioned, the physicality that should be fouls but arent called, are what I was trying to say haha. Just couldn't find the right words. If refs allow that happening I think Baker has a chance. We'll see. I think Toledo wins by about 15 though. I think Kings pulls the upset however.

Yeah, there always will be some fouls that happen that aren't called but you hope for some kind of consistency to come out of the game so kids can adjust and play accordingly. That's the kind of game that can drive kids crazy is when the officiating crew is inconsistent and you don't know from one trip down the court to the next what's going to be called. I may be wrong but I'm not sure MB guards will be able to handle Toledo's full court, trapping pressure. I only saw them play once so I may be way off base on that one. It was hard to tell because Cascade C never really brought any kind of pressure to them except at the very end and then it looked like MB was doing everything they could to give it away and CC couldn't capitalize. I know one thing, in high school basketball anything can happen and nothing should ever be taken for granted.
As for Kalama, Kings has a chance if they can contain the penetration and not give up open looks because every one of those Kalama kids can shoot it. They really like to get out in transition, and they're used to putting teams away by putting up points in bunches. There's one other thing I noticed in the Kings game Sat is I thought the pg for Kings was very suspect and Kalama really gets after it in the full court. But once again that's the first time I've seen the kid so maybe I read him wrong also.

Baker as surprised me greatly so far so I'll be careful in saying anything for certain. However, I think the report will be to pressur their guards. If they handle it they handle it, but I believe it would be smart to make them prove that they can handle the pressure.

While I expect Toledo to win the game, I will be surprised if Baker doesn't handle the pressure reasonably well. They play Sehome every year (twice this year) and the Mariners bring it for 32 minutes. Sehome worked them over pretty good the first time they played this season, but I noticed Baker fared considerably better the second time around. If nothing else, Mount Baker has proven to be resilient.

Agree with that assessmant Warrant. I'm really excited, and hope that the NWC 1A will have 2 reps at the dome this year. Arguably coach Gray's best coaching job.
