Re: Another All-State catcher in the D-1
VanWinkle is hitting .156 in 13 games and has a .208 OBP? Ouch, welcome to college baseball. No back-up at catcher at Gonzaga? Just kidding. I think he will be fine and will turn it around in the weeks ahead as he is a very good baseball player. It's a big step to go from high school to D-1 and see high 80's, low 90's every weekend.
Another Washington All-State catcher from the 2004 season, soph. Brett Linnenkohl at Wake Forest, hitting .556 in the 3 games he's played so far(injured a hamstring but should be back next week for the ACC opener against #3 ranked North Carolina). He started all 58 games last year as a freshman in LF and hit .253 with 3 triples, 4 home runs, and 44 RBI's: http://wakeforestsports.collegesports.com/sports/m-basebl/recaps/021706aaa.html
ACC is the toughest conference this year for baseball with Clemson, Georgia Tech, UNC, FSU, NC State, and Miami all in the Top 20 and Wake Forest getting votes at 7-3 and just knocked off then #1 Florida, #12 Missouri, and Big Ten defending champ Ohio State to win the Pepsi Classic last weekend.
Other Washington boys playing D-1?
One is Travis Storer of Mt. Vernon a senior at #1 ranked Clemson.
