....to 2A with 508 students. Why in the world would Hockison opt up? There are plenty of 1A schools in SW Washington. There must be something going on behind the scene....right????

For football reasons alone you think it would be tough for any public school to opt up from 1A to 2A.

the 1a league would double their travel cost and i understand they think they will be back up in 2 years

Travel to Ilwaco, Stevenson, White Salmon adds up when everybody else in your league is 30 minutes away

True, there's a lot of 1a schools around... but competitively... Hockinson competes with 2A schools well... the Mark Morris/Hockinson rivalry remains hot... Hockinson/Ridgefield rivalry from a few years ago could be renewed now that Ridgefield's coming back to 2A GSHL...

Hockinson is just happy in the 2A GSHL competitively and can still afford the expenses of travelling to its members to play... no reason to go down to 1a..

Ask an AD from Whte Salmon or Ilwaco about their transportation costs. They wipe a big whack out of the athletic budget. Ilwaco teams get back from White Salmon at 2:30 a.m .The shortest distance to a league game is 90 minutes away. THere are almost no visiting fans at league home games. Ilwaco's Trico games are B-G doubleheaders and there is not room for both JV teams on the bus . Many JV games are scheduled with nearby 2B and Oregon schools. Hopefully in two years they will be in 2B and get to compete with teams in their own county.

Warrant: Girls soccer went to the first round of state this year, the football team captured the league title with an undefeated league season, volleyball got to the playoffs and did fairly well. Boy's basketball team got second in league. Girl's basketball competed. Boys soccer was league champs, undefeated in league. Baseball did really well. Boys golf got fourth in state... yeah, they might not do exceedingly well in some sports against Evergreen and they don't usually stack up against teams up North and out east... but they are doing just fine against local 2A competition.... and many have fared well at the state level or at least competed. So yes, really.

Whatever you say HockSports. I just took a look at all the State brackets for Boys and Girls sports this last season. The boys weren't in any State bracket in any sport. The girls made the first round in Soccer before losing to Sumner. If you're comfortable with the Classification you are competing at, that's what matters. Being able to compete with the teams in your league is one thing. Competing with teams around the State in the 2A classification is quite another. I think every student athlete should have a "fair" chance to compete for a State Championship. Opting up, clearly minimizes that opportunity.
