Pick'em Challenge - Semi Finals

Can you believe we only have 2 more weeks left????

Leaders - GoKnights, OldGrenedier, and EastsideFB all with perfect picks (14 points)
(12 points) - Wash_Sports, FrontRowJoe
(Others) - Little74, MonteMom, WahFan, Wolfram, KingGriz, JJSpeedRacer

Well the Zillah/Newport game was quite a battle, hope the games this week will be this close. Every time I try to get an edge up on the leaders, I pick the wrong way. That High School football for ya. This week is no different. Four very tough teams left and at this point, there is no free games. Tell us who you think will win and why. Semi Finals means double points.

LC (10-2) @ Newport (10-1)***
Colville (9-2) @ Royal (12-0)

Semifinal preview and webcast info -- Royal vs Colville

How is it that every week of the playoff season seems longer than the previous week? After much anticipation, Royal will face the Colville Indians in the 1A Washington State Semifinals at Lyon’s Field in Moses Lake at 1pm on Saturday. This will be the toughest contest yet for the Knights as they square off against a Colville squad that was ranked #2 in the preseason by many. They opened the season with a few unexpected losses while missing a few key players, but have battled back and won 9 straight since. They avenged their week 2 loss to Meridian with a 42-22 win in the rematch last week in the quarterfinal round. Before that, they blew out Connell in the opening round. Results against common opponents have been very similar.

The Indians are a run-first team that comes at you from all angles, but they are competent through the air as well. The Knights will be focused on stopping their ground attack first and hoping to put them into some long down and distance scenarios. Both teams have comparable size at the line of scrimmage, so the advantage will go to the team that is more physical with that size. Sure tackling will also come at a premium. For Colville, the feature back will be Jakob Larson, a shifty back with great balance. For Royal, Alonso Hernandez combination of speed and power will present problems for the Colville defense.

Both teams ran through the respective leagues without resistance. Colville scores 39 per game while only conceding 12. Royal posts 56 per game and hold their opponents to 3. Something has to give. What will make the difference? Which will move on past this penultimate contest and play for the trophy? Make your way to the game and find out for yourself.

Thoughts on Quarterfinals and looking forward.

Mt. Baker @ Royal: The folks on the Doug Lange podcast for Whatcom County sports seemed to think the Mounties were their best chance to beat Royal. I nearly crashed my car on the freeway from laughing at their delusions of grandeur based on the SCAC not being good. The fact is, one dimensional teams have a very, very, very difficult time beating the Black and Gold. Burkett almost got it done last year because he could run.

LC @ Hoquiam: Zero surprise here given how the rest of the league had performed in the first round. I'm not sure the Grizzlies, even at 100% would've mustered a good enough effort to keep it close. That league on the coast needs to reach out and see how they stack up statewide next year.

Colville @ Meridian: I know Meridian won the first match, I knew Colville would win the second round. Knight and the Indians just seemed to grow after losing to Cheney and Meridian to start 0-2. This gives the feeling of Saturday's meeting with Royal like the real State Championship the way they're both playing.

Newport @ Zillah: Leopards did not have a good barometer for where they stacked up against the rest of the state. They generally get out coached somewhere down the line, that's just in the Zillah DNA. Newport had already seen a way better version of ground and pound in Colville earlier in the season.

Pick 'em Challenge - Quarter Finals

Well, Last week was easy right...... maybe for some, but this week I will have to take emotion out of my picks and get down to business. (or just copy and paste from GoKnights)

Leaders - GoKnights, OldGrenedier, and EastsideFB all with perfect picks (9 points)
(8 points) - Wash_Sports, FrontRowJoe
(Others) - Little74, MonteMom, WahFan, Wolfram, KingGriz

Lets see who you've got this week.

LC (9-2) @ Hoquiam (10-0)
Newport (9-1) @ Zillah (10-0)
Colville (8-2) @ Meridian (8-3) ***
Baker (8-4) @ Royal (11-0)

Thoughts About First Round and Quarterfinals

#9 Mount Baker Mountaineers at #1 Royal Knights - Saturday, 1:00pm at David Nielsen Field (Royal City)
#10 Newport Grizzlies at #2 Zillah Leopards - Friday, 6:00pm at Rich Leenhouts Stadium (Grandview)
#6 Lynden Christian Lyncs at #3 Hoquiam Grizzlies - Saturday, 5:00pm at Stewart Field (Aberdeen)
#5 Colville Indians at #4 Meridian Trojans - Saturday, 1:00pm at Civic Stadium (Bellingham)

First Round Thought: No close games outside of Newport/LaSalle which was still a two score game at the buzzer. There were three shutouts (Royal, Hoquiam, LC), Connell and Montesano each took it on the chin. Not many surprises outside of the margins of Colville and Mt. Baker right?

1A Road to the Dome starts now – Pick’em Challenge

Thank you Go Knights for the help last week. I have been out of pocket with work and haven't even had a chance to smack talk 1A football.

Well, the brackets are set, weather you agree or not, it is what it is, and the challenge begins. You will get 1 point for picking the correct team each week. I will pick one game that will be worth 2 points each week. This game will be noted with a “***”. You could be part of the greats like SmallPox in 2014, or FrontRowJoe in 2015, and 2 time champ GoKnights 2016/2017. Its time to pick for the big marbles, yep its tournament time where anything can (and does) happen.

***11 CCC (7-1) @ 6 Lynden Christian (8-2)
14 Stevenson (7-1) @ 3 Hoquiam (9-0)
10 Newport (8-1) @ 7 La Salle (8-2)
15 Klahowya (7-2) @ 2 Zillah (9-0)
12 Connell (7-2) @ 5 Colville (7-2)
13 Elma (8-2) @ 4 Meridian (7-3)
9 Baker (7-4) @ 8 Monte (7-2)
16 Riverside (7-4) @ 1 Royal (10-0)

State seeding

Looking at it, seeding is going to be very important this year....#1 is obvious in Royal and #2 will probably be Zillah.....after that is going to be interesting....I know in the Evergreen Hoquiam is the #1 seed and will have a bye in crossover week, winner of Monte-Elma will get #2 and host Trico #3....as for state seeding this is going to be very interesting because #1 and #4 are on the same half of the bracket same with #2 and #3...so here is my look at the top 5 seeds going into the playoffs as of today....
#1 Royal
#2 Zillah
#3 Hoquiam
#4 Okanogan
#5 Connell

Week 8 - Easy Week

Well one more unbeaten downed last week. split decision on Colville and Newport, but the NEA loves to keep it interesting all season long.....

Coming down to the end of the season we are starting to see the division champions sorting out. Tell us who you have. Trying making it easy this week except the Game of the week.

Sequim (7-0) @ Hoquiam (7-0) One more unbeaten going down.
Meridian (5-2) @ Baker (5-2)
Newport (5-1) @ Riverside (4-3)
Riverview (3-4) @ Royal (7-0)
KiBe (3-4) @ Connell (4-2)

Monte-Tenino

Just heard that Tenino has forefited their game this Friday due to not having enough healthy players...This is very interesting because they got their asses whooped last week vs Elma 62-0....makes me think that they didn't want to face a pissed off Monte team......all in all I wish Tenino well in getting all their players healthy!!

Big Challenges for the Unbeaten's this week.

After six weeks Royal, Omak, Zillah, Hoquiam and Newport remain undefeated. Meridian knocked Lynden Christian down a peg, Woodland took Montesano to the woodshed, Hoquiam gave Elma their first loss. It begs the question, which of these undefeated teams (aside from Royal) is for real?
Omak beat Cascade 14-0 and hasn't played the most difficult schedule. They play Reardan Friday.
LaSalle and Zillah play in an awful SCAC West. Zillah's biggest test was called at halftime due to lightning in a 7-0 game. Those two play this Friday @ Zillah.
Hoquiam beat a pretty good Elma team, but still has to play Monte this Friday at home.
Newport has their biggest test this upcoming week as well as they travel to Colville.
Royal takes on Ki-Be in Benton City.

Who is going to make it out unscathed?
